{"id":4214,"date":"2021-04-01T14:16:36","date_gmt":"2021-04-01T18:16:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ortn.edu\/highschool\/?p=4214"},"modified":"2021-04-01T14:16:36","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T18:16:36","slug":"dan-joy-won-1st-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ortn.edu\/highschool\/2021\/04\/01\/dan-joy-won-1st-place\/","title":{"rendered":"Dan Joy Won 1st Place"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel Joy won 1st place at the Tennessee Junior Science and Humanities Symposium Poster Presentation Competition held virtually on March 4-5, 2021.\u00a0 Daniel, son of Ingrid Busch and Ken Joy, presented his poster, \u201cUsing Data Science to Explore Historical Trends and Predict Future Rates of COVID-19\u201d. His research involved analyzing COVID-19 case rates around holidays using regression analysis. Dan worked with Dr. Chad Steed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory through the Math Thesis course at Oak Ridge High School.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Williams, co-teacher of Thesis at ORHS said \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled that UTK was able to provide this opportunity to students this year. TJSHS is a unique opportunity for high school students to present their scientific research in a professional setting. \u00a0We appreciate the support from our administration and the community to provide this course to our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dan commented, \u201cThat moment when the program finally works after the 17th bug fix is one of the best feelings.\u201d He went on to say, \u201cIt\u2019s great when your research supports your hypothesis, but I think it\u2019s more interesting when your hypothesis is wrong. Then you get to debate why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TJSHS is an annual scientific research competition that gives high school students the opportunity to present original research in a public forum.\u00a0 There were 14 students that presented oral talks and 3 students who presented posters at the 56th annual TJSHS competition this year. As the top winner, Dan is invited to the National Symposium and qualifies for National Symposium Poster Presenter cash awards in April.
