ORHS wants to remind candidates to follow candidacy rules as we approach the election timeline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s Girls State Time!<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 75th Session of American Legion Auxiliary Volunteer Girls State is set to convene virtually from\u00a0<strong>Tuesday, June 1 \u2013 Friday, June 4, 2021<\/strong>. The deadline for registration is\u00a0<strong>March 15.\u00a0<\/strong>Girls State is a nonpartisan program offered annually to more than 575 of Tennessee\u2019s rising high school seniors and is centered on citizenship, teamwork, and fostering a love of God and country. Experienced volunteer staff and counselors \u2014 each one a program alumna \u2014 help guide participants, or \u201ccitizens,\u201d through the week as they elect city, county, and state officials, engage in party politics, debate legislation, and collaborate in a host of fun team activities.\u00a0The cost for this year\u2019s session is $100 per student. In order to participate, you will need to join the Canvas course called \u201cGraduation Speaker Tryouts 2021.\u201d The link to join the course will be emailed to all seniors on March 8 through school email.\u00a0 Once you enroll in the Canvas course, you will find an \u201cassignment\u201d for graduation and convocation speaker tryouts. Please be sure to have the following in<\/p>\n<p>order to increase your chance of survival:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Working smoke alarms<\/li>\n<li>Home Escape Plan and practice it twice a year.<\/li>\n<li>Close the door when sleeping and when escaping a room or building that is on fire.<\/li>\n<li>Call 911 and report fires or emergencies immediately. When you hear a smoke alarm, get<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>outside and stay outside.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If you need smoke alarms in your home, please contact the Oak Ridge Fire Department at<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>865-425-FIRE (3473) or email smokealarms@oakridgetn.gov.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Working smoke alarms save lives, cutting the risk of dying in a home fire in half by having working<\/p>\n<p>smoke alarms in the home.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>every level of the home including the basement.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Test smoke detectors monthly<\/li>\n<li>Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years.<\/li>\n<li>Change the batteries twice a year or when the detector chirps indicating a low battery.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure everyone in the home understands the sound of the smoke alarm. When you<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>hear a smoke alarm, get outside and stay outside according to your home fire safety plan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Home Escape Plan<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure you have working smoke alarms inside and outside of every sleeping area, and<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>on every level. Make sure that everyone in your home knows the sound and understands<\/p>\n<p>the warning of the smoke alarm and knows how to respond.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make a home escape plan by drawing a map of each level of the home, showing all doors<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>and windows. Go to every room to identify two ways out of the room. Make sure all of<\/p>\n<p>your windows and doors will open and everyone knows how to remove screens. Practice<\/p>\n<p>your plan with everyone in the home at least twice a year.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Have an outside meeting place (something permanent, like a tree, light pole, or mailbox) a<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>safe distance in front of the home where firefighters will easily find you.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure your house number can be seen from the street both day and night.<\/li>\n<li>Please be sure that everyone knows how to call 911 and report fires or emergencies<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>immediately. When you hear a smoke alarm, get outside and stay outside.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Close the door<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A closed door is one of the best pieces of firefighting and lifesaving equipment. It can:<\/li>\n<li>Reduce fire growth and spread<\/li>\n<li>Limit damage to your home<\/li>\n<li>If you have to leave a room that is on fire, simply closing the door behind you can be the<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>best decision you make.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Close the bedroom door when sleeping.<\/li>\n<li>Close doors behind you when escaping a room or building that is on fire.<\/li>\n<li>Keep fire doors closed. Never wedge, disable or prop open fire doors in any building.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cooking<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. Stay in the kitchen and be alert. Turn the burner off if you leave the kitchen for any reason. b. Have a \u201ckid free zone\u201d of at least 3 feet around the stove and area where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. c. Keep things that could catch fire (i.e. oven mitts, paper, utensils, food packaging, towels, curtains) away from the stove and heat sources. d. Keep stovetop, burners, and oven clean. If you need smoke alarms or assistance with home fire safety please call (865) 425-FIRE (3473) or email smokealarms@oakridgetn.gov<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Heating appliances in the home \u2013 Electric Space Heaters<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn heaters off when you go to bed or leave the room.<\/li>\n<li>Have at least a 3 foot \u201ckid-free zone\u201d around space heaters.<\/li>\n<li>Use only listed space heaters.<\/li>\n<li>Purchase space heaters that automatically shut off if they are tipped over.<\/li>\n<li>Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlets and never into an extension cord or power<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>tap.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you need any smoke alarms or additional information, please call (865) 425-FIRE (3473) or email<\/p>\n<p>smokealarms@oakridgetn.gov<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Carbon Monoxide<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a gas you cannot see, taste, or smell. It is often called \u201cthe<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>invisible killer\u201d. It is created when fossil fuels such as kerosene, gasoline, coal, natural gas,<\/p>\n<p>propane, methane, or wood don\u2019t burn completely. CO gas kill people and pets.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Headaches, nausea, and drowsiness are symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Exposure can be fatal.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>CO alarms shall be installed outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Follow manufacturer\u2019s instructions for placement and mounting height.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Test CO detectors monthly and replace if they fail to respond.<\/li>\n<li>If CO alarm sounds, immediately exit per your home escape plan and call 911. Do not go<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>back until fire department personnel declares it is safe to re-enter the home.<\/p>\n<p>A fire can breakout with little or no warning. The more prepared you are, the safer you will be. Smoke<\/p>\n<p>detectors should be located on every floor of your home and near all places that you and your family<\/p>\n<p>sleep.
