Club will meet after school on Friday until 4:30. Bring your cards and be ready to duel in Dr. Colquitt\u2019s room, CS 235. All students are welcome! (1\/21-1\/22) \u2013 R. Colquitt<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>ACT Prep: <\/u><\/strong>\u00a0Coach Etheridge will hold an ACT Strategies Session on Wednesday, January 27, from \u00a08:30-9:30 AM in CS 336. Please email (<a href=\"mailto:AEtheridge@ortn.edu\">AEtheridge@ortn.edu<\/a>) if you would like to attend. There is room for 12, but if more are interested, I can add more sessions. Seniors have priority for this one, which will focus less on academic content than it does on how to play the ACT game to win. I will hold more sessions in February for juniors, who take the statewide test on March 2 at ORHS. I\u2019ll post that information weekly. Etheridge<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s that time of the year where we are required to share 2021 Fire Safety Information:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table width=\"701\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"701\"><strong>FIRE SAFETY Announcement<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"701\"><strong>3 minutes or less is how much time you have to escape a fire. Please be sure to have the following in order to increase your chance of survival<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Working smoke alarms<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Home Escape Plan and practice it twice a year.<\/p>\n<p>c.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Close the door when sleeping and when escaping a room or building that is on fire.<\/p>\n<p>d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Call 911 and report fires or emergencies immediately. When you hear a smoke alarm, get outside and stay outside.<\/p>\n<p>e.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you need smoke alarms in your home, please contact the Oak Ridge Fire Department at 865-425-FIRE (3473) or email smokealarms@oakridgetn.gov.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"701\"><strong>Working smoke alarms save lives, cutting the risk of dying in a home fire in half by having working smoke alarms in the home.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home including the basement.<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Test smoke detectors monthly<\/p>\n<p>c.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Change the batteries twice a year or when the detector chirps indicating a low battery.<\/p>\n<p>e.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Make sure everyone in the home understands the sound of the smoke alarm. When you hear a smoke alarm, get outside and stay outside according to your home fire safety plan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"701\"><strong>Home Escape Plan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Make sure you have working smoke alarms inside and outside of every sleeping area, and on every level. Make sure that everyone in your home knows the sound and understands the warning of the smoke alarm and knows how to respond.<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Make a home escape plan by drawing a map of each level of the home, showing all doors and windows. Go to every room to identify two ways out of the room. Make sure all of your windows and doors will open and everyone knows how to remove screens. Practice your plan with everyone in the home at least twice a year.<\/p>\n<p>c.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Have an outside meeting place (something permanent, like a tree, light pole, or mailbox) a safe distance in front of the home where firefighters will easily find you.<\/p>\n<p>d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Make sure your house number can be seen from the street both day and night.<\/p>\n<p>e.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Please be sure that everyone knows how to call 911 and report fires or emergencies immediately. When you hear a smoke alarm, get outside and stay outside.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"701\"><strong>Close the door<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A closed door is one of the best pieces of firefighting and lifesaving equipment. It can:<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reduce fire growth and spread<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Limit damage to your home<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you have to leave a room that is on fire, simply closing the door behind you can be the best decision you make.<\/p>\n<p>c.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Close the bedroom door when sleeping.<\/p>\n<p>d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Close doors behind you when escaping a room or building that is on fire.<\/p>\n<p>e.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Keep fire doors closed. Never wedge, disable or prop open fire doors in any building.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"701\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cooking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. Stay in the kitchen and be alert. Turn the burner off if you leave the kitchen for any reason.<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Have a \u201ckid free zone\u201d of at least 3 feet around the stove and area where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.<\/p>\n<p>c.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Keep things that could catch fire (i.e. oven mitts, paper, utensils, food packaging, towels, curtains) away from the stove and heat sources.<\/p>\n<p>d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Keep stovetop, burners, and oven clean.<\/p>\n<p>If you need smoke alarms or assistance with home fire safety please call (865) 425-FIRE (3473) or email smokealarms@oakridgetn.gov<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"701\"><strong>Heating appliances in the home \u2013 Electric Space Heaters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Turn heaters off when you go to bed or leave the room.<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Have at least a 3 foot \u201ckid-free zone\u201d around space heaters.<\/p>\n<p>c.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Use only listed space heaters.<\/p>\n<p>d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Purchase space heaters that automatically shut off if they are tipped over.<\/p>\n<p>e.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlets and never into an extension cord or power tap.<\/p>\n<p>If you need any smoke alarms or additional information, please call (865) 425-FIRE (3473) or email smokealarms@oakridgetn.gov<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"701\"><strong>Carbon Monoxide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a gas you cannot see, taste, or smell. It is often called \u201cthe invisible killer\u201d. It is created when fossil fuels such as kerosene, gasoline, coal, natural gas, propane, methane, or wood don\u2019t burn completely. CO gas kill people and pets.<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Headaches, nausea, and drowsiness are symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Exposure can be fatal.<\/p>\n<p>c.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 CO alarms shall be installed outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. Follow manufacturer\u2019s instructions for placement and mounting height.<\/p>\n<p>d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Test CO detectors monthly and replace if they fail to respond.<\/p>\n<p>e.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If CO alarm sounds, immediately exit per your home escape plan and call 911.
