The 15th Amendment, ratified in 1870, declared that all men had the right to vote, regardless of race. In 1920, women gained the right to vote when the 19th Amendment was ratified. However, black men and women were systematically barred from expressing this Constitutional right to vote by racially-motivated laws and policies. It wasn’t until 1965 when the Voting Rights Act was passed that people of color officially and explicitly had the right to vote. Even today, there’s a lot more to fair elections than a ballot box.
